1. Overview
Audible Atlas respects the intellectual property of others and expects its users to do the same. We respond to notices of claimed copyright infringement under the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. §512) and the “notice and notice” provisions of Canada’s Copyright Act (sections 41.25 to 41.27), and we apply the same process to notices from anywhere in the world.
2. Sending a copyright notice
If you believe a sound on audibleatlas.com infringes a copyright you own or are authorized to act for, email contact@audibleatlas.com with the subject “Copyright notice” and include:
- identification of the copyrighted work you claim is infringed (or a representative list if there are several);
- the exact URL of each sound on audibleatlas.com you want removed;
- your name, mailing address, telephone number and email address;
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law;
- a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner’s behalf;
- your physical or electronic signature.
A notice under Canada’s Copyright Act must also state your name and address, identify the work and your interest or right in it, specify the location of the material, and describe the infringement you claim.

Signed-in users can also flag a sound with Report → Copyright on its page. A formal notice by email is the authoritative route and the only one we can act on for rights holders without an account.
3. What we do with a notice
- We review notices promptly and remove or disable access to the material identified in a valid notice.
- Where the sound was uploaded by a user, we forward the notice to that account as Canadian law requires, and keep the records the law requires for six months (twelve if court proceedings are started).
- Removed sounds and their audio files are deleted; a record of the removal is kept.
- We will tell you when we have acted on your notice.
4. Counter-notification
If your sound was removed and you believe this was a mistake or a misidentification, you may send a counter-notification to contact@audibleatlas.com containing:
- identification of the material that was removed and the URL where it appeared;
- a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification;
- your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your district if you are in the United States, or otherwise to the courts of Ontario, Canada, and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice;
- your physical or electronic signature.
We will forward the counter-notification to the original claimant. Unless they tell us within 10 business days that they have filed a court action, we may restore the material between 10 and 14 business days after receiving your counter-notification.
5. Repeat infringers
We terminate the accounts of users who are the subject of repeated valid notices, and may do so earlier where the circumstances justify it.
6. Misrepresentation
Knowingly misrepresenting that material is infringing, or that it was removed by mistake, can make you liable for damages (including under 17 U.S.C. §512(f)). Please consider whether a use is permitted by fair use or fair dealing before sending a notice.
7. Where sounds come from
Sounds on audibleatlas.com are uploaded by users or added by Audible Atlas from publicly available sources. Both are handled the same way: a valid notice leads to removal, and the sound stays removed.
